iCancervive WalkathonA Semester in PhotosInterview with Dr. Barry Kayrell, Superintendent of HUSD
Chris Morales: Can you give us a little introduction as to who you are? Dr. Kayrell: My name is Dr. Barry Kayrell and I'm very excited to be here and I'm watching a great football game and having a good first 6 weeks here in Hemet. And looking forward to a longer stay and to support our schools. And all the people I've met are very positive in support of our bond measure that just passed and Prop 30 passed and so financially we're looking pretty good today. And, again I'm very excited to be here and work with a great group of teachers and administrators. Morales: You've had 6 weeks here, did you have some first impressions when you first came here and if so have they changed? Have they changed for the better or for the worse or really been the same? Kayrell: Yeah, you know what, it takes time to get used to a new system, and again coming from Beaumont this is a much bigger district. So you know learning how the systems work well with each other and monitoring, but so far I've been really impressed with the people, how well they function together, and you know what, we're going to do some very exciting things. Morales: A very hot topic has been the integration of technology in schools, what are your thoughts on that? How can schools benefit from that? Kayrell: I think the 21st century skills are critical, and we have to get as much technology for our students as possible. Our internet connectivity, our wireless hubs, virtual programs, sectorial programs that can aid instructors. And we know that not all kids learn the same way and so, I think the more we're connected I think the better off we're going to be and technology's doubling almost every 3 years. so for young people to be ready to go and compete in the world economy they have to be up on technology. Morales: Are there any few words you'd like to give to the students at Tahquitz? Kayrell: You know what, I'm very excited. You have a great student body, you have a great administration and great teachers. This is your first time in the CIF playoffs and it's a great tribute to all your kids and your coaches and I'm very excited to be here. |
